How
to cover a disaster like tsunami
A media skills development programme on coverage of disasters will
be held between 28and 30th June 2005 in Colombo. Organised by the
Press Complaints Commission of Sri Lanka, the programme is held
in collaboration with the European Commission, the Konrad Adenauer
Stiftung, SIDA, NORAD, DANIDA, Fojo and the Media Research and Training
Institute of the Jaffna University.
Noting that the media played a major role in disseminating information
to people during the tsunami disaster in December, the PCCSL said
the programme was to cater to the urgent need to provide professional
training on covering disasters.
“The
need for professional training in the coverage of natural disasters
became conspicuous after the tsunami as several complaints relating
to cases of inaccurate and unethical coverage were received and
followed up by the PCCSL,” the PCCSL said.
It
said the PCCSL was in the process of drafting guidelines for such
coverage in consultation with editors and newspaper publishers and
these guidelines were in keeping with the Code of Practice of The
Editor’s Guild of Sri Lanka. |
