JVP
won’t return, forging new Alliance
The JVP will not return to the United People's Freedom Alliance
despite all the pressure moves. It would consider such a request
only if the Joint Mechanism deal is dropped, parliamentary group
leaderWimal Weerawansa declared yesterday.
"There
are appeals from many quarters within the Government for us to re-join.
We have been told that the portfolios held by JVP Ministers are
still vacant but there is no way we can join the Government,"
he told The Sunday Times.
He
said his party leaders were busy forging an alliance of those opposed
to the Joint Mechanism. Such an alliance, he said, would encompass
those from the SLFP, the UNP and other political groups. Mr Weerawansa
said the decision of the JVP to quit the UPFA was taken after careful
study.
He
said his party had not been consulted by President Kumaratunga on
any issue that warranted a collective decision. He said the Joint
Mechanism was one which affected the future of the nation but the
JVP had been kept in the dark, despite all the promises to keep
it briefed.
