Trinco
Tamil Consortium leader’s house attacked
The house of the chief coordinator who carried out the campaign
against the placing of the Buddha statue in Trincomalee and later
tried to work out a compromise came under a grenade attack on Friday
night, Police said.
Tamil-speaking youth had made inquiries about the residence of the
President of the Trincomalee District Tamil People’s Consortium,
V. Vigneshwaran, in Ambuvallipuram and thereafter carried out the
attack. But the first grenade had hit the residence of Mr. Vigneshwaran’s
brother-in law.
Two subsequent grenade attacks were also carried out later in the
night in close proximity to Mr. Vigneshwaran’s house.
Police
said that nobody was injured in the attack though Mr. Vigneshwaran’s
wife and children were inside the house. Mr. Vigneshwaran was away
in Jaffna at the time of the incident.
Mr.
Vigneshwaran who was actively carrying out a campaign against the
placing of the Buddha statue near the market place, last week for
the first time held discussions with Buddhist monks and other organizations
in an attempt to reach an amicable settlement. The case on the controversial
Buddha statue is to be taken up in the Trincomalee District Court
on July 4. |
