‘The
Rock’:Typical English style
The stonewalled and wood beamed The Rock is a perfect imitation
of England's rural 'bed and booze' inns that as a native Devonian
girl, I'm so familiar with. Glowing with dim electric lantern light,
The Rock was a welcoming place to arrive on a dark, chilly hill
country night.
Once inside, it morphed from feeling like an English pub to become
more like a countryside bed and breakfast cottage with pretty floral
curtains and eiderdowns in the simple but spacious bedrooms.
The Rock has twelve large rooms with all fgacilities.
All rooms have satellite TVs and modern bathrooms. Perched on a
hill and a little out of the way of the main Nuwara Eliya drag,
the views of rolling tea plantations and misty hillsides seen from
between the room's white-shuttered windows were particularly picturesque.
A fastidiously
presented three course set meal was served in the small downstairs
dining room -the service was immaculate and the unfussy food good.
The hotel also had a terrace with hill views and an airy colonial-style
morning room/bar area with wicker chairs and a large satellite TV.
Unfortunately,
the Rock seemed quiet on the night we stayed which gave it an eerie,
empty feel, as if the building was far too big for the number of
people occupying it. Other than that, a very homely place to stay.
‘The
Hotel is centrally located and is popular with overseas visitors.
Sri Lankans too come during the season and we never had any bad
period after taunami’ Manager said. -Suzy Steer
