Mendis
quit under protest

The Western Province’s newly-appointed Chief Minister Nandana
Mendis yesterday resigned from his post but he severely criticised
Governor Alavi Moulana’s decision to reappoint former Chief
Minister Reginold Cooray.
Mr. Mendis told The Sunday Times he had resigned after he received
instructions from the President’s Office.
Mr.
Cooray is due to be sworn in today as the Chief Minister.
“Though I respect the decision of the party, I still strongly
disagree with the actions of the Governor,” he said. Pointing
out that Governor Moulana’s actions were unconstitutional,
Mr. Mendis said he was still pondering whether to take legal action
against the decision. “There are regulations, such as no-confidence
motions, to deal with a councillor who holds a post,” Mr.
Mendis said.
“The
Governor had no authority to appoint a new chief minister while
the position is occupied,” he said adding that the Governor’s
decision was a violation of his fundamental rights.
Mr.
Mendis said he protested over the Governor’s decision at a
meeting held at the Governor’s office on Thursday and alleged
that there was some foul play behind the decisions taken at the
meeting.
“The
nature of the meeting was most suspicious – although it was
intended only for group leaders, there were several other councillors
who were present,” he said.
“I
asked the Governor to seek legal advice before taking any decision,
but he ignored by advice,” Mr. Mendis said. He said he was
writing a letter to the President, lodging his protest over the
Governor’s decision and added he would consult Premier Mahinda
Rajapakse also on the matter.
The
decision to reappoint Mr. Cooray was taken after 29 UNP councillors
joined 25 PA councillors and six others to formally ask the governor
for Mr. Cooray’s reappointment.
The
WPC has been in crisis for several months since the UNP initially
moved a motion of no-confidence against Mr. Cooray on corruption
charges. This was backed by the JVP and Mr. Cooray was forced to
resign. |
