Polls
chief won’t talk
Elections Commissioner Dayananda Dissanayake has continued to decline
to comment on the date for the next Presidential elections. “I
will not talk about the date of the Presidential elections,”
Mr. Dissanayake told The Sunday Times amidst growing concern and
speculation over the timing.
Many
independent analysts say that in terms of the constitution, it is
the Elections Commissioner who must decide on the date for the next
presidential poll.
President
Chandrika Kumaratunga and SLFP frontliners this week reiterated
that the Presidential elections would not be held before November
next year.
But with growing speculation over whether Premier Mahinda Rajapakse
or Anura Bandaranaike would be the presidential candidate, a party
Central Committee meeting where a decision was to be taken has been
put off. |
