Flouting
road rules tops offences during Poson
Violation of road rules was the main offence committed by vehicle
users during the Poson festival season in areas leading to Anuradhapura.,
Police traffic headquarters said yesterday.
Driving
without a licence, driving over the white line and keeping objects
on the front of the vehicle obstructing the view of the driver,
were among the major offences that were reported.
Nearly
11,000 detections were made during a four-day special operation
carried out in Anuradhapura, Polonnaruwa, Chilaw, Kurunegala, Nikaweratiya,
and Matale areas by a special team from the traffic police headquarters
led by Director Traffic Police Headquarters Senior Superintendent
of Police Lucky Peiris.

350 other law enforcement officers took part in the operation..
Violation of road rules totalled 1747, driving without license 1165
and use of tinted glasses 683.Anuradhapura reported the highest
number of violations with 2297 followed by Kurunegala with 2162
and Polonnaruwa with 1447 cases.Driving without a number plate was
another illegal act with Nikaweratiya and Polonnaruwa recording
94 each. Polonnaruwa took first place for the offence of transporting
goods in a dangerous way in vehicles.
Only
Chilaw reported two cases of offences at railway level crossings.
Among the reported traffic offences, driving under the influence
of liquor showed a big decrease. Nikaweratiya and Polonnaruwa each
reported only two such cases.The operation was carried out to ensure
the safety of tens of thousands of pilgrims who gathered during
the Poson season. |
