Wilpattu
jumbo killing: Milroy’s statement awaited
The CID team inquiring into the shooting of an elephant and four
of its young, in the Wilpattu jungle is said to be awaiting a statement
from the Christian Affairs Minister Milroy Fernando within the coming
two weeks.
The
animals are said to have received gunshot injuries from a T 56 rifle
in the Pomparippu jungle area close to the church in the jungle.
They are said to have been shot by some unidentified group.
The
special police team deployed by the IGP to probe the incident last
week obtained a statement from Major Handunetti of the Army Commando
unit wherein he had stated that the incident took place around the
time a group of 101 soldiers were undergoing a stint of training
in that region.
This
group is said to have not received prior permission for such training
in the jungle and had been training in small groups inside the jungle. |
