SLMM-Govt.
to discuss Tiger demand
The SLMM head Hagrup Haukland will meet Peace Secretariat chief
Jayantha Dhanapala on Monday, four days ahead of the deadline by
the LTTE, in an attempt to resolve the controversy over providing
security arrangements for Tiger cadres crossing government territory.
Mr.
Haukland’s meeting would follow another meeting between Mr.
Dhanapala and President Chandrika Kumaratunga. “We are expecting
a response from the Government on Monday”, Mr. Haukland said
referring to the two-week deadline set by the LTTE on providing
their own security between the North and the East.
The
LTTE has delayed naming their representatives to the P-TOMS committees
on June 16 pending a response from the Government. The Government
representatives are also yet to be named. Rehabilitation and Reconstruction
Ministry Secretary M.S. Jayasinghe said they were expecting to get
the Committees operational within two weeks of the signing.
Mr.
Haukland on Thursday while travelling to the Trincomalee district
made an attempt to meet LTTE district leader Elilan, but the meeting
had to be called off as he was not present. |
