Trinity
edge out St. Peter’s
By Shamseer Jaleel
Trinity coming out for the first time for this season edged out
St Peter’s College by 15 points (1 goal, 1 try, 1 penalty)
to 11 points (1 try and 2 penalties) in a friendly encounter played
at Bambalapitiya yesterday. At “lemons” the “Lions”
led 5-0.
Trinity
had a dull initial half not finishing their good work and converting
them into points. They missed two certain tries in this half. The
margin of victory would have been greater had the backs not squandered
a series of golden opportunities.
The
lads from Kandy opened scoring in the 24th minute of the game through
full back D. L. Jayawardena off a sweeping three quarter move. The
conversion was missed by stand off Pushpakumara to take 5-0 at the
short breather.
St
Peter’s playing attacking rugby early in the second half scored
through 2nd rower Haren Ariyawardena in the 14th minute off a forwards
rush. The conversion was missed by Meedin. In the 25 the minute
of the game, nippy stand off Pushpakumara took the “Lions”
ahead through a simple 25 metre penalty.
Tuan
Meedin took St Peter’s ahead through two well converted 30
metre penalties. (11-8 Peters lead). With the game going in to the
last minute Trinity was in attacking from the centre line and scored
through a 3rd phase move when centre R. Runatunge went through the
shell shocked Peterite line to score under the post. Pushpakumara’s
conversion gave the Trinity a well deserved victory by 15-11
