take women’s sevens

Army 'A' clinched the Scorpion 7's rugby title when they recorded
a thrilling five nil win over Slimline Pannala in the cup final.
It was a fitting finale with two teams who have been at the forefront
of women’s rugby in Sri Lanka clashing in the final which
gave the spectators some thrilling moments. The first ever All Island
Women's Scorpions 7's rugby tournament organized by MAS intimates
and sponsored by Singer Sri Lanka Ltd was held at the Slimline grounds
in Pannala yesterday.
The
tournament saw 12 top women's teams around the island participating
and was held along with the inter-department tap rugby tournament
for men that attracted ten teams. The main tournament was the women's
category which the organizers and sponsors were conducting with
the aim of developing women's rugby in Sri Lanka which has reached
great heights within a short period of five years.
The
women's cup final held as the last was preceded by the shield, bowl
and plate finals in both categories. The men's tournament fought
out by teams from MAS Holdings firms around the island saw Stretchline
beat MAS Active 12-0 to win the shield, MDS defeated CCL 26-5 to
take the bowl and Linea Aqua overcame Bodyline 26-0 to win the plate.
The cup final was a clash between sister companies Slimline Pannala
and Unichela Panadura, the former coming out as favourites was unfortunate
after having dominated play to go down in the last minute by 5-0.
In
the women's category the shield was won by the lasses from the CR
and FC who overcame Dambulla RFC 15-0. Army 'B' scraped through
to a 5-0 win over Sabaragamuwa RFU to take the bowl while newcomers
to rugby Panduwasnuwara RFU beat the experience Seethawaka RFU 5-0
to take the plate title.
The
highlight of the tournament was the organizers and sponsors handing
over rugby jerseys, shorts and boots to all the teams that participated
in the tournament. The women's teams that participated in the Scorpions
7's were Slimline, Army 'A', Army 'B', Kekirawa RFU, Seethawaka
RFU, Anuradhapura RFU, Dambulla RFU, CR and FC, Bomiriya RFU, Panduwasnuwara
RFU, Meegoda RFU, Sabaragamuwa RFU. |
