JVP
unions threaten to block CEB reforms
JVP-led unions in the Ceylon Electricity Board are demanding a written
assurance from Power and Energy Minister Susil Premajayantha that
the CEB will not be privatized at least for the next two years.
Union
leaders warned yesterday that if such a written assurance was not
given, they would block the implementation of the latest CEB reforms
package which was approved by the cabinet last Wednesday.
“We
are agreeable to reforms in the CEB, but will strongly oppose the
setting up of a company,” Viduli Bala Sevaka Sangamaya General
Secretary Ranjan Jayalal said.
He
said that if a written assurance was not given, the unions would
begin their agitation with a protest campaign outside the CEB headquarters
early next month.
Mr.
Jayalal said his union met leaders of 21 other CEB unions on Friday
to discuss the issue and most of them were supportive of the demand
for a written assurance though some unions had agreed to the latest
reforms package. |
