Environment
in celluloid
An international short film festival with films and documentaries
on environment will be held on July 28 and 29 at Mahaweli Centre,
Colombo.
The festival was organized by Sri Lanka Environmental Television
Project (SLETP), an organization which carries environmental awareness
programmes with films and documentaries. SLETP supports a large
number of schools to educate children on environmental issues through
videos.
The
short films on bio-diversity, marine environment, disaster management
and other environmental related issues produced by BBC, NCK (Japan),
Mercury Films (Russia) and India will be screened at 9 am and 4
pm. 'The Children of Tsunami', a documentary featuring the children
from six countries including Sri Lanka who were affected by the
tsunami disaster will also be screened.
Environmentalists,
university lecturers and scholars will give talks on subjects relating
to environment. Among the speakers are environmentalist Piyal Parakrama,
Customs Superintendent, Samantha Gunasekara, Professor Ekaratne
of Colombo University, Professor J. Jinadasa of Jayawardenapura
University, Madhawi Malalgoda (UNDP), Lional Hewawasam Deputy Director,
Centre for Housing Planning and Building and Surendra Silva of Video
Image.
Meanwhile SLETP also has organised competition of documentary and
short films on the environment. This competition is held for both
school and open applicants to build their creative skills.
Awards
and certificates will be awarded on July 29 for the winners of the
competition at Mahaweli Centre. The SLETP will donate five VHS tapes
for the three schools who win the first, second and third places
at the school section of the competition. Further information could
