JHU
states its position on Presidential candidate
The Jathika Hela Urumaya (JHU) will support a Presidential candidate
only if he promises to uphold the ‘Pancha Dharma Prathigna’
(fivefold principles) which were presented at the JHU National Convention
on June 23.
The
declaration stated the rightful candidate should pledge to safeguard
Sri Lanka as a unitary state and recognise that the national heritage
of Sri Lanka is vested in the Sinhalese who formed the civilisation
of the country while safeguarding the rights of minority ethnic
groups. It firmly stated that no agreement whatsoever should be
arrived at with the Tigers or any other terrorist organisation.
The
candidate should further uphold to carry out constitutional reforms
amending the Executive Presidency and proportional representation
systems, strengthen the sovereignty of the people and the independence
of the judiciary and build an indigenous culture and economy according
to Buddhist philosophy. The JHU leadership stated that if any political
party fails to uphold the fivefold principles the JHU would field
its own candidate for the Presidential elections.
