More
party powers for CBK
The Constitution of the Sri Lanka Freedom Party is to be amended
to confer sweeping powers on its leader.
The
Central Committee of the party which met on Wednesday to endorse
the candidatures of Mahinda Rajapakse for the Presidency and Anura
Bandaranaike for the Premiership took this decision.
It
decided that a Committee comprising Minister Mangala Samaraweera
and a team of lawyers supportive of the party should finalise the
draft amendments. It was Mr. Samaraweera who proposed the changes
to the party constitution since President Kumaratunga is due to
step down from the Presidency.
This is after the upcoming Presidential elections either in 2005
or 2006.
