US
organisation promotes local English education
The US based Serendib Organisation has planned an English and Peace
Education campaign for children between the age of 11 and 16 commencing
in August, Serendib President Tucker McCravy said.
He
said that the programme will be open to all children in Sri Lanka
and Serendib plans to recruit 150 children from all the religions
to enhance peace and harmony in the country. Mr. McCravy said that
the teachers are trained to build leadership, creativity, trust
and tolerance among children and educate them on the subject of
Information Technology.
He
said that the teacher-training is more valuable as even after the
training camp is over the teachers will keep on passing the knowledge
they received to the children. Therefore the message will spread
more expediently.
The
Serendib Organisation which is funded by USAID has established themselves
from 1997 and have held English training camps for 3,500 children
in Sabaragamuwa Province.
Mr.
McCravy said that the budget for Serendib’s All Island programme
is estimated to be US$ 16,000 as they hope to receive funding from
other NGOs and from the corporate sector of the island. He said
that the Education Ministry has been extremely supportive of their
efforts to empower the Sri Lankan future generation with the knowledge
of English. The curriculum of Serendib is being used by the Ministry
as well.
Mr.
McCravy said that the training campaign will be assisted by foreign
teacher assistants from USA, Canada and Thailand who have backgrounds
in Engineering, English training, Public Health, Law and Business.
Interested parties could contact The Serendib to enrol their children
to the Training Camp on E-mail stucker@serendib.us.
