Bee
Gee’s Robin bobbing here
By Ranjit Vethakan
Robin Gibb, one half of what's left of the mighty Bee Gees, will
play in Colombo in the second week of September. According to well-placed
industry sources, based in Los Angeles, Gibb will be making his
first ever appearance in Asia, either as a solo act or with his
illustrious brothers.
They
told The Sunday Times on Friday that he would be performing either
at the CR & FC grounds or at the Sugathadasa Indoor Stadium,
either on September 7 or 8, and would be backed by a full 25-piece
orchestra.
Robin
Gibb's Asian tour will include performances in Singapore, Kuala
Lumpur, Thailand, Hong Kong, Manila and will fly direct to Colombo
following his concerts in Tokyo.
The
Bee Gees, who were responsible for some of the major hits during
the time when disco music held sway, and since, have remained dormant
since the sudden death of Robin's twin brother, Maurice, nearly
two years ago.
Although
Robin and his elder brother, Barry, vowed to carry on as the Bee
Gees, the latter has hardly ventured outside, confining himself
to writing.
He is reportedly collaborating with several major names in the business
on their latest albums.
Robin
Gibb will be performing a major part of the catalogue of Bee Gees
hits, like Saturday Night Fever, Staying Alive, Tragedy, Massachussetts,
Too Much Heaven and a lot more, will also include some of the tunes
he's penned himself for his solo work.
Folliowng
the successful visit to Colombo by the evergreen Engelbert Humperdinck
in June, which was also exclusively reported in The Sunday Times,
Gibb's visit will also help the Sri Lankan capital to be included
on the tour plans of the region by some of the major stars in the
world of music.
However, despite reports in the local media of a possible visit
by the popular Tom Jones, The Voice, as the powerful Welsh crooner
is known, is not available to tour the region until the second half
of 2007. |
