Top surgeons battled for more than one hour to save Foreign Minister
Lakshman Kadirgamar’s life when he was rushed to the National
Hospital after being shot in the head and chest on Friday night.
Hospital
director Hector Weerasinghe said, Mr. Kadirgamar was admitted around
11.05 p.m. and specialists including a cardiologist, neurologist,
orthopaedic surgeon and anaesthetist were called in for the emergency
operation.
He
said the minister had been shot twice in the chest, once in the
head.
“A penetrating gun shot wound to the right side of the chest
was a serious injury,” Dr.Weerasinghe said.
Mr.Kadirgamar
was pronounced dead around 12.15 a.m. Colombo Chief Magistrate Kusala
Sarojini Weerawardene later visited the hospital for an inquiry.Several
VIPs including President Chandrika Kumaratunga rushed to the National
hospital soon after they heard of the shooting.
