Feast
of the beat
Some of the world’s most talented master drummers and percussionists
will gather for the WOMAD (World of Music, Arts and Dance) Sri Lanka
festival of drums from September 21-25. WOMAD gives its name to
the internationally established WOMAD Festival, which brings together
artistes from all over the globe. The central aim of the festival
is to celebrate the world’s many forms of music, arts and
dance.
The
festival will feature four concerts at Bishop’s College auditorium
and four club night sessions at the gallery, Beira Lake in Colombo.
Workshops will also be held at the gallery. There will also be two
outstation concerts -at the University of Peradeniya grounds in
Kandy and on the beachfront in Negombo.
A lively ‘festival field’ will be held at the Galle
Face Green, on Saturday and Sunday.
This
festival will also feature a global village of crafts, textiles
and musical instruments, as well as an exciting selection of Sri
Lankan, Asian and other international cuisine.
The
festival will showcase at least 14 different groups and artistes
from 12 different countries including Bill Cobham (USA), The Dhol
Foundation (UK and India) and the Drummers of Burundi. Classical
Kandyan dancer and renowned choreographer Ravibandhu Vidyapathy
will coordinate and direct performances of the percussion and dance
of Sri Lanka.
The
event is being organised with the Sri Lanka Tourist Board.
