SLC
prefers local ‘Official Clothing Supplier’
By Marlon Fernandopulle
Sri Lanka Cricket (SLC) expects one of the island’s leading
brands in garments like Hameedias, Odel, Emerald etc. to come forward
as the ‘Official Clothing Supplier’ of the National
Cricket team in the near future.
With
the two year contract of the current clothing supplier Trendy, coming
to an end next month, SLC has invited local and international clothing
manufacturers, interested in showcasing their brand, to express
their interest and make a bid before the end of this month.
Speaking
to the Sunday Times SLC Marketing Director Jayantha Kudahetty said:”
This is an ideal time for one of our local garment manufacturers
to come forward and make use of a very good opportunity to showcase
their brands to the world. We all know how popular cricket is in
Sri Lanka and outside. I believe that a local brand which wants
a very good exposure here and abroad can make use of this chance”.
Popular
local Clothing manufacturers Hameedias, Odel, Emerald and others
are expected to compete with the international brands like Adidas,
Fila, and Reebok for SLC’s latest offer.
The
official clothing supplier will have to provide the playing and
training gear not only for the Sri Lanka National team but also
for the Sri Lanka A team and the Sri Lanka Under 19 team for a period
of two years. Apart from other benefits the Clothing supplier will
also have the franchise to market their products here and abroad.
Kudahetty insisted that in keeping with international standards
the clothes would have to be manufactured from the latest moisture
management material.
SLC,
which recently signed up the internationally famous local tea brand
Dilmah as the official team sponsor, expects a couple of millions
from the two-year contract with the official clothing supplier who
has to be a manufacturer of garments.
More
players to get contracts.
SLC is expected to offer a further twelve promising young cricketers
official contracts shortly. Earlier this year SLC contracted eleven
players for a one-year period. Senior players who missed out, players
who have been in and out of the senior team along with promising
A team players are expected to be included for the new contracts.
