Lankan
docs help US hurricane victims
A group of Sri Lankan-American doctors based in the US under the
banner of the Sri Lanka Medical Association for North America (SLAMANA)
have organised themselves to go to Louisiana to help in the post-hurricane
work in the state of New Orleans.
A
spokesman for SLAMANA said this was their way of reciprocating the
massive support the US gave Sri Lanka during the post-tsunami relief
operations. The group was awaiting a feedback on needs and logistics
to move into Louisiana.
Meanwhile,
US Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice has thanked Sri Lanka during
a news conference in Washington DC, on Friday for the token donation
of US dollars 25,000.
President
Chandrika Kumaratunga issued a statement expressing Sri Lanka's
sympathies over the loss of life and property due to Hurricane Katrina
that devastated the US gulf coast earlier this week and Opposition
Leader Ranil Wickremesinghe has sent a letter to President George
W. Bush expressing his sympathies.
