AFLAC’s
tsunami housing initiatives
AFLAC International (AFLAC), dealing in tsunami relief work, has
completed two housing projects, one in Kalamulla, Kalutara and the
other in Siribopura, Hambantota, with the help of funds from the
JP Morgan Chase Foundation.
In Kalutara, the19-house project with water and electricity was
completed on land donated by the Good Shepherds Congregation and
the Archdiocese of Colombo was occupied by the tsunami affected
families.
The
Siribopura housing project in Hambantota is on land provided by
the UDA, where each of the 20 houses is 550 square feet in area
and is located on a 20 perch block of land. A third, larger housing
project is due to commence in Panadura in an area which requires,
according to the Tsunami Housing Reconstruction Unit (THRU), 2,675
houses (Moratuwa) and 4,275 (Kalutara district).
The
financial support program has over 200 enrolled children from around
Sri Lanka and they are assisted in their schooling needs by a monthly
grant of Rs.2,000. AFLAC has also completed construction of a preschool
in Kiwula, Hambantota, and a similar construction in Pottuvil is
scheduled for completion in September 2005.
