Lion
Brewery helps develop animal feed supplement
The Lion Brewery Ltd has helped develop an animal feed supplement
based on spent yeast which could save millions of rupees in foreign
exchange from importing expensive animal feed supplements for pets.
Spent yeast is a brewery by-product.
The
product will be available in power and capsule forms, in different
pack sizes and will be distributed by Hector Pietersz & Co Ltd
(HPCL), the company said at the launch of the product last week.
Hector
Pietersz, Managing Director, HPCL told the Sunday Times FT that
his firm buys the spent yeast from Lion Brewery and transforms it
into products such as food supplement for animals. The product is
also available in large pack sizes and it could be given to cattle,
poultry, pigs, cats and dogs.
Dr Chad Kanagachandran, Manager, Special Projects, Lion Brewery
said that the waste water sludge spent yeast is transformed into
organic fertilizer, packed and marketed by HPCL. Around four metric
tons per month is turned out as animal food.
He
said the beer company has installed machinery worth around Rs 7
million to dry the sludge into flakes and HPCL powders and turns
them into capsules.
Earlier Lion Brewery had paid for the disposal of this waste, but
the company hopes to earn a profit by turning the spent yeast into
animal feed in the future.
