Wickremanayake
captures Free Lanka Classic
Free Lanka Trading Co., Ltd, sponsored an excellent Stroke Play
competition at the Ridgeways on Saturday at which Sanjeeva Wickremanayake
was the star performer with a magnificent nett 68 in the “A”
Division Classic. Wickremanayake hits a helluva long ball and on
his good day which is quite frequent his putting is exceptional.
He beat Alain Gyi who started refreshingly and then mucked around
to lose his position. Sarath Wickremaratne. C. Twerenbold and to
some degree Primal Wijenayake messed around merrily in the disaster
zone.

Janak the burly Hirdaramani after a long sojourn returned to the
Ridgeways and proved he had not lost his feel for the ball and its
direction. He smashed a stunning nett 66, took the “B”
Classic called up his pal Kumar Mirchandani and planned out an excellent
felicitation party at Airport Garden. H.C. Noh who had a great round
of nett 68 came 2nd to qualify to be an invitee to the Hirdaramani
bash. Thiagalingam Nirmalalingam, Sohli Captain, Uncle Willie Barsenbach
and Rohan Fernando had rough times on the outskirts of the fairways
with occasional dips in the ponds.
“C”
Division
There was a titanic struggle between Gerrard Amerasinghe and Gehan
Siribaddana. Both comparatively new to the game they relished their
outings, played rewarding golf and ended with Siribaddana congratulating
Amerasinghe on a victory by a very slender margin. Both were richly
applauded. Chandana de Silva, Ranjit Jayawardena, Rex Hatherley,
Prasanna Goonetilleke, Sampath de Soysa and V. Govindasamy compared
notes at the 19th after their wild encounters and there are good
reasons to believe they’ll be on the fairways in the future
and when on the greens they’ll know what they have to do.
Good luck to that delightfully pleasant crop of popular golfers.
Seniors
Sugath Weeraratne alert and enthusiastic came pretty good with a
stunning round of nett 66 and quite naturally he was so immensely
elated with his performance that he flashed the 19th for an elastic
hour. Spritely Norman Gunewardena came a good 2nd with nett 68 and
added to the fun and gaiety round the same table at the 19th.
Masters
A.H. Sherrifdeen and Neil Chanmugam locked horns in combat on nett
73 and then the crafty Sherrifdeen released himself to get ahead
and win.
