Limited over game for the J R Jayewardene Trophy
By Marlon Fernandopulle
The seventh edition of the NCC-SSC limited over clash for the J
R Jayewardene trophy will be played on the 2nd of October (Sunday)
at the NCC grounds. This year the organizers have taken a further
step forward to concurrently have a twenty-twenty game for the veteran
players (over forty years) of the two clubs at the SSC grounds.
The
cream of Sri Lanka players including the likes of Kumar Sangakkara,
Russell Arnold, Upul Chandana, Lasith Malinga, Upul Tharanga, Prasanna
Jayawardene, Ravindra Pushpakumara (NCC) and Marvan Atapattu, Mahela
Jayawardene, Tilan Samaraweera, Dilhara Fernando, Nuwan Zoysa, Avishka
Gunawardene (SSC) are expected to play in this year’s game.
NCC lead the tally with three wins to their opponents two, with
one game ending in a no–decision. Last year’s encounter
was won by NCC.
Two
former Sri Lanka Captains - Arjuna Ranatunge (SSC) and Hashan Tilakaratne
(NCC), captained the inaugural game. Some of the stars of the past
are expected to play in the twenty – twenty game which will
also have a super substitute. Thus being the first instance when
the new concept is being used in a domestic match.
In
addition to the high standard of Cricket that will be witnessed,
the much looked forward to game between NCC and SSC provides an
ideal opportunity to foster the fellowship between the two great
Clubs which have stayed very close as neighbours over the years.
Former
SSC and Sri Lanka captain Anura Tennekoon will be the adjudicator
while former NCC and Sri Lanka wicket keeper Brig. Dr H I K Fernando
will be the Chief Guest.
