South Africa ‘A’ once again demonstrated their cricketing
prowess when they thrashed New Zealand ‘A’ by six wickets
in their triangular tournament match at the SSC grounds yesterday.
After
bowling out New Zealand for 169 runs,South Africa rattled up 170
for 4 wickets in 35.2 overs to record their second successive convincing
victory in the triangular tournament which also features hosts Sri
Lanka.
Despite
loosing three early wickets and being badly placed at 39 for 3 wickets
the South Africans led by a defiant unbeaten 84 from opener A Puttik
and a solid 45 not out from Z de Broyn,reached their target with
over 14 overs remaining.Left hander Puttik struck 16 boundaries
in his 95 ball knock while De Broyn struck three boundaries for
his unbeaten 45.
Earlier
the Kiwis who were invited to bat first were made to work hard for
their runs by a disciplined South African bowling attack. The South
African bowlers reduced the Kiwis to 27 for 3 wickets in the first
15 overs and tightened their grip later on despite brief resistance
from the experienced Mathew Sinclair (29),James Marshall (32). Only
a 39 run stand for the 7th wicket between Hopkins(26) and How (31
n o) saved the Kiwis from total disaster as they were eventually
bowled out for 169 runs in the 49th over
Once
again for South Africa D. Steyn
(2 for 23), R. Peterson (2 for 43) and J. Botha (2 for 35) were
among the wickets.
