Jayawardena captures world golfers’ trophy
The inaugural tournament for the World Golfers awards organized
by the Sri Lanka Golf Union held at the Royal Colombo Golf Club
was a rousing success thanks to the formidable duo of Dian Jayasuriya
and Priya Fernando with firm assistance from Hermione Richards.
In
the First Division hefty Arshad Ahmed was outstanding. Off handicap
5 his was a classy performance which gave him 139 points over 2
rounds and the trophy beating Sheron Fernando whose performance
was praiseworthy. Alain Gyi got into a small loose messIn Division
Two another hefty fella Sunil Jayakody gave his wife Manori good
reasons to beam all afternoon. He struck a splendid 142 to collect
the trophy beating colourful stroke player S. Vairavanathan by just
one stroke. Two others Sweenetha Selvaratnam and Arjun Fernando
performed well to settle on the same score 143. Misery struck Niloo
Jayatilleke and Romesh Abhayaratne as they made confetti on the
2nd day.
Division
Three
Sprightly youngster Dilip Kodikara was at his stunning best. His
first round of 63 was great and with a par round following he collected
134 and the trophy beating ready and steady Ananda Jayasekera. Shiran
de Soysa and Lal Dias followed impressively. The confetti production
line was loaded and those who produced the best packs and design
were Kumar Mirchandani, Mahesh Hirdaramani and Stefan Griffins.
Robin Jackman raised absolute hell.

Shavinda
In the group of handicappers between 16 – 20 Shavinda Fonseka
made a superb entrance with a classy total of 137 nett over 2 rounds.
Sharp and packed with confidence the teenager has style and grit.
His first round was shade untidy but on the 2nd on Sunday the fella
was positive and determined and jealously guarding his strokes he
picked 64 to total 137 and collect the trophy amidst loud applause,
A promising star for the future if he comes under good wings he
struck a magical Hole-in-One just recently. Thejan de Silva, L.P.V.
Jayaweera and Kushal Perera peppered flashy centuries in great style.

Sparkles
In the Handicap Division 21 – 25 Ranjit Jayawardena played
2 brilliant rounds 67 & 64 to total the lowest of the tournament
131 and win the trophy for this division and also be identified
as the overall winner. Jayawardena was jubilant. R. Sangani came
behind with 143 which included a great 67 on the 1st day. Ken de
Alwis, Bandula Wimalaratne, S.R. Subramaniam and J.G.L. de Mel cracked
classy centuries. Heather Lourensz made a colourful pack of confetti
on the 2nd day.
Division
26-30
26 Handicapper L. Jayasekera picked an amazing nett 63 on the first
day and despite a naughty 76 on the 2nd day he totalled a trophy
winning score that pleased him immensely. Mrs. F. de Mel a popular
regular came 2nd beaten by the slender margin of one stroke.
Maleena
Awn. Kamlash Johnpillai and Ajantha Mylvaganam moved into the century
area effortlessly and with a great amount of pleasure. Rahula Seneviratne
had this to say “Why pay Rs. 3500/- to go into the water and
move into distress when I can get all that free in my normal game”.

Wing
Arshad Ahamed, Sunil Jayakody, Shavinda Fonseka, Dilip Kodikara,
Ranjit Jayawardena and L. Jayasekera winners of each Division take
wing to Antalya, Turkey and check in at the Floria Resort as guests
of World Golfers. The tournament picks up on 19th November 2005.
Arnold Palmer heads World Golfers and will be the Guest of Honour.
Awards
The award ceremony as slick. Chitranjan Bakshi the franchise holder
was eloquent and was quite pleased with the success of the tournament.
Dian Jayasuriya and Shiran de Soysa were fluent and refreshing to
listen to and finally Priya Fernando proposed a vote of thanks in
style. The fellowship was great and there were no interruptions
at speech time from the Long Bar.
