Sivaram
killing: PLOTE cadre evading arrest
By Telles Anandappa
A PLOTE cadre, wanted in connection with the killing of well-known
journalist Dharmaretnam Sivaram, is reportedly evading arrest amidst
reports he may have even fled the country, police detectives said.
They
said the suspect was believed to be the person who allegedly fired
the shots that led to Mr. Sivaram’s death. Detectives said
so far only one suspect known as Sriskandarajah, has been arrested
in connection with the murder inquiry.
They
said though no witnesses had identified the suspect the SIM card
of Mr. Sivaram’s mobile phone was found in his possession.
Investigators said the suspect who is alleged to have driven the
jeep in which Mr. Sivaram was taken away has not disclosed how he
came to possess the journalist’s SIM card.
Police
said the investigations had revealed that the vehicle belonged to
PLOTE leader, Dharmalingam Siddarthan and they had granted permission
for the vehicle to be released to Mr. Siddarthan, but he had so
far not come to collect it.
Meanwhile
the suspect Sriskandarajah’s counsel had requested the case
to be transferred from the Kaduwela courts to Avissawella High Court
for the purpose of obtaining bail.
Though
six witnesses turned up at the suspect’s identification parade,
none were able to identify the suspect. Colombo Crime Division Inspector
Rajapaksa told Chief Magistrate Champa Janaki Rajaratna that as
the investigations were still continuing the suspect should be further
remanded.

Sivaram, 46, was a senior editor of the Tamilnet website and a writer
for an English-language paper. Known to be a fearless champion of
the Tamil cause, he was abducted from a restaurant on April 28 and
his body found early the next day close to the parliament complex.
Mr Sivaram had been gagged and shot in the head. |
