Stop
the Budget: UNP to tell government
By Chandani Kirinde
The main opposition UNP is to request the Government not to go ahead
with the Budget on November 8 on the basis it could be used to buy
votes with popular proposals.
Assistant
Secretary Tissa Attanayake said the UNP parliamentary group would
meet soon to work out a strategy to block the budget. The Government
said last month that it was going ahead with the Budget on November
8 though the presidential election was fixed for November 17 and
the course of events might change after that.
Last
Tuesday, the Government presented the Budget’s prelude, the
Appropriation Bill, outlining expenditure and revenue for 2006.
Mr.
Attanayake said the UNP believed the new president elected on November
17 should have the freedom to formulate next year’s budget
and the government should instead present only a vote on account
next month. |
