Music minded
By Ishani Ranasinghe
Love, love changes everything…
The powerful voices of over 70 choristers is heard as I make my way to the main hall of St. Bridget’s Convent. Unmistakably these young people are hard at practice as I sat down to watch them rehearse for their upcoming show, Musically Yours directed and choreographed by Ruwani Seimon.

One and a half months of endless training over, they are just days away from bringing one of their best performances to the music loving public here in Colombo.

The choristers are all enthusiastic, energetic and definitely excited. What has it been like, what do they think of the show… they all had views to share especially the six choristers I managed to speak to.

Having been hard at practice for a while now it was amazing how full of life these choristers wesre. All of them were very experienced; singing for almost nine years now they are all full of praise for each other and of course pretty confident about themselves as well.

“We have a wide repertoire of songs,” says Sheranga Perera adding that their selections are very new. As they see it everyone does things like pop songs but what they are going to do is bring in a whole new flavour to things, “we are going to set the trend.”

For example the medley from Bombay Dreams. “No one has ever tried this and we are also singing baila (acapella),” she says excitedly while Judy Herft pipes in, “no one sings baila on stage at a choir festival.”

Explaining the line up for the evening they say that they want to start off with a slow song and then pick up the pace and get the crowd going. With the variety of songs that is performed being different to each other, Judy believes that this gives the choristers the chance to, “show off their talents.”

Our concerts are different… they all very enthusiastically declare. “A lot of people don’t sing and dance,” says Sheranga adding that she feels that this is the main difference of their concert. Another difference is that they express their emotions through song and dance at their concerts. “We have so much fun on stage, which is why people also enjoy the show,” says Thilini Dokes. Being part of a concert of this nature is surely not an easy thing, “I think we are pulling off a miracle,” says Roshani Kumarasinghe.

Explaining herself she says that usually with a concert they have at least about three months training but this time they had to do it in one and a half months.

With the limited time they say that they have learnt to do things quicker and pick up things faster as well. At the end of the day they admit that they love a challenge.

“Everyone has sacrificed a lot for this concert,” says Kauchi Selvanayagam adding that they have been breathing and living this concert. “We practically live in school,” adds Roshani admitting that they are ‘loving’ every minute of it. It has always not been easy and they have had to face a few hurdles but as they are one big happy family together they have managed to overcome them.
Speaking about their director they are full of praise for her and its evident they really do love her and it’s she who makes this experience for these choristers that much more meaningful.

“She is a unique person,” they all agree while they add that in their eyes she has so much commitment and dedication. She keeps us going,” says Dilini Perera adding that sometimes when they are so tired that they feel like they might faint on the spot, it’s she who keeps their energy up. “She is a really tough spirit and we all look up to her,” says Sheranga.

“She has taught us so much,” says Thilini while the others chip in saying that it’s not only to sing but also to sing with passion and conviction is something they’ve learnt. “It’s really wonderful to have her and we owe so much to her,” they say whole-heartedly.

Getting back to the concert…
“It’s going to be so good that everyone is going to start dancing…” they say with such enthusiasm that I honestly can’t argue with them because they certainly are determined.

“Musically Yours” will thrill the audience of Colombo on October 21, 22 and 23 at the Lionel Wendt. The main sponsor for the event is Pepsi while Access and Islandwide Suppliers are coming in as co-sponsors for the concert.
