Muslim
MPs finally decide on CC nominee
By Shelani Perera
After months of debate over Muslim representation, the Muslim parliamentary
group have finally nominated a member to the Constitutional Council
(CC).
Muslim Parliamentarians group head A.H.M Fowzie said it unanimously
decided last week on Prof. H.M. Sherifdeen.
“I
will inform the Prime Minister and the Opposition Leader when parliament
meets next,” said Mr. Fowzie. Meanwhile, the election monitoring
body PAFFREL, is to urge President Kumaratunga to set up the CC
as the terms of the Police and the Public Service Commissions were
to lapse soon.
“The
term of the Police Commission lapses on November 25 while the Public
Service Commission ends on December 2. With the Presidential polls
due next month it’s important that the Police Commission monitors
post-election violations and transfers. Similarly the Public Service
Commission is also important in regard to promotions,” Mr.
Rodrigo said.
