Akberally wins IGP's trophy
Asgi Akberally proved that he was the best among the good, when
he took away the trophy given by the Inspector General of Police
to the Best driver in the Good Driver contest. Nearly 50 competitors,
ranging from regular faces in the motoring field, through corporate
entries and extending to the lady in the car next to you, took part
in this novel and interesting competition.
The
Good Driver Contest was conceptualized by the CMSC the oldest Motoring
Club in Sri Lanka. Traditionally a motor racing club, the CMSC has
recognized a role to be played in reversing the alarming trend of
road accidents and fatalities. Safety is a core value of the FIA
(the world governing body for Motor Sport). As the local representative
of the FIA, the CMSC is bound to carry the safety theme through
into road safety.
Top
honours went to Asgi Akberally, who was navigated by his son. And
there was a healthy mix of well known racing drivers, and regular
motorists among the prize winners. In a sense though, the real winners
will be the general public, as initiatives such as these will lead
to our streets being a safer place for society.
At
the prize giving SSP Lucky Peiris, representing the IGP looked forward
to future events being organised on a regional basis, leading eventually
to a national Good Driver Contest.
