Sri
Lanka ‘A’ undone again
By Marlon Fernandopulle
New Zealand A ‘s pace –spin combination of Chris Martin
and Bruce Martin shared nine wickets between them to send Sri Lanka
A crashing to 165 all out in the second four day game played at
Havelock Park yesterday.
After
over one and a half days of play was lost due to rain the tourists
who are already one up in the three match series were at full throttle;
yesterday as the sun shone brightly at Havelock Park. Opening bowler
and test cap Chris Martin proved to be a menace to Sri Lanka’s
second string top order batsmen who once again failed to deliver.
Martin picked up 5 for 41 and leg spinner Bruce Martin gave him
good support with 4 for 38 as the tourists restricted Sri Lanka
‘A’ to 165 all out.
Opener
Ian Daniel (40),Thilina Kandamby (44) and all rounder Gayan Wijekoon
(26) were the only batsman to get a start to their innings, but
ironically failed to convert their knocks to anything substantial.
The Lankans who were closely watched by the Chairman of Selectors
Lalith Kaluperuma lost their last five wickets for just 21 runs
in what has now become a familiar feature of the Sri Lanka ‘A’
team and a perennial problem for the selectors.
Sri
Lanka ‘A’ struck back through their opening bowlers
Nuwan Zoysa and Gayan Wijekoon to reduce the tourists to 46 for
4 wickets at one stage before skipper Peter Fulton and test allrounder
Chris Harris came together and stringed a useful 56 run partnership.
Fulton
was in full cry as he made use of his height and some loose bowling
from the Lankans to hit four sixes and four boundaries and be unbeaten
on 72 by the close. The New Zealand skipper found a useful partner
in wicket keeper Gareth Hopkins (22 n o) and added 59 runs for the
6th wicket to take his team to a commanding 161 for the loss of
5 wickets.
