Use
SMS to report polls violations: PAFFREL
By Dhananjani Silva
People’s Action for a Free and Fair Election (PAFFREL) has
called on the public to promptly report election-related violence
and malpractices via short text messages when they come across such
instances during the upcoming election.
Election
monitors will attend to the messages received on tel. no. 0722-446464
with regard to election malpractices from anywhere in the island
and alert the police or the Elections Commissioner on such matters.
Speaking to The Sunday Times, PAFFREL executive Kamal Perera said
this method is swift and effective and therefore many people will
show a great interest in it.
“When
such a matter is reported, PAFFREL will get it clarified from its
field officers and keep its monitors informed to ensure that these
complaints receive adequate attention. Depending on the gravity
of the incident, we will inform the police or even the Elections
Commissioner,” he said. Apart from reporting polls violence
and malpractices, the public can even send text messages to this
number on issues such as not receiving polling cards, problems in
ballot papers, etc., as this monitoring scheme covers three main
areas – the pre-election period, election day and the post-election
period.
