Attack
on journalists deplored
The Free Media Movement has condemned the assault on the Sunday
Leader journalist Ranee Mohamed and photographer Berty Mendis when
they visited the residence of Lt.Col.T. Meedin who was killed last
Sunday.
FMM
has constantly appealed to all political and other power groups,
such as the military, not to harass journalists in any way. Such
harassment is an attack on the freedom of expression as well as
the journalists’ human rights.
FMM requests that both the Inspector General of Police and the military
authorities initiate an immediate impartial inquiry into the assault
and bring the suspects to book, according to a FMM statement issued
this week.
Meanwhile,
Brigadier Fardyle Meedin, brother of the assassinated Army officer,
denied there was any assault of the two journalists. "I only
took exception to their recording my conversation. I would have
expected them to have first sought my permission, which is nothing
but ethical for the media. This was not done and I had to ask them
to withdraw." He said he had explained his position in a statement
to the Peliyagoda Police.
