Ranil
pledges to develop provinces
The UNP Presidential candidate Ranil Wickremesinghe yesterday pledged
to concentrate on developing the infrastructure in the provinces
ensuring more job opportunities and raise the living standards in
these areas.
"We all are Sri Lankans and I want to give a house to everyone.
I will give you a house irrespective of where you live. I will establish
a separate project to build houses for working people in the up-country."
Mr. Wickremesinghe addressing an election rally in Bandarawela last
night said.
Mr. Wickremesinghe emphasised the need of standardizing all the
schools as national schools. "I will develop all the schools
and standardize them as national schools and provide job opportunities
for the youth with means of new factories and tourist regions,"
he said.
"We
need water, electricity and infrastructure to develop these areas
and I hope to get foreign aids in the development process. A fully
equipped technical college will be given to every electorate to
encourage the youth. We will obtain foreign aid to set up technical
colleges and vocational training centres," Mr. Wickremesinghe
added.
Ranil
Wickremesinghe pledged that he would take necessary steps to build
an air port in Wellawaya next year and a harbour at Hambantota including
a power station and an oil refinery.
"As
the JVP protested the resumption of peace talks the government was
unable to obtain the 500,000 million American and the 450,000 million
aid from the Tokyo Donor Conference. I will invest that money in
the development process.
The
Indian market is 50 times larger than our market and using of the
economic ties between India and Lanka we will be able to enter their
market and strengthen our economy," Mr. Wickremesinghe added.
"Though President Chandrika Bandaranaike began peace talks
in vain I was successful in carrying it forward. I signed the CFA
to stop the war including the right of the forces protecting the
territorial integrity," he said.
"I must thank the CWC, Upcountry People's Front and the SLMC
for their cooperation to continue the peace process. I will invite
the PA too to provide essential support," he added.
