By Dilip Rangajith
Despite complaints from Transparency International, public resources
are still used for election work, Programme for Protection of Public
Resources spokesman Joel Fernando said.
In
its Programme for Protection of Public Resources, TI has detected
more than 20 election related abuses, reports of which have been
forwarded to the Bribery Commission, the Auditor General and the
Police.
We have a tremendous team to investigate the abuses of public resources
islandwide,” TI Executive Director J.C.Weliamuna said. Allegations
include the use of Temple Trees for political meetings, use of Air
Force helicopters, the Gramodaya Centre being used to stock and
distribute election propaganda material, use of two collapsible
stages on wheels from the Petroleum Corporation for political campaigns
supporting the PA candidate and use of vehicle No. 58-2186 belonging
to the Plantations Ministry for PA election propaganda work in the
Weligama area.
The
Rupavahini Corporation has been allegedly requested to provide advertisements
on credit offering a relatively small advance of Rs.500,000.
