Dhaka
summit: CBK’s final act on Asian stage
By Chandani Kirinde
President Chandrika Kumaratunga is to attend the SAARC summit in
Dhaka on November 12 and 13 — her final act on the Asian stage
as the President of the country.
Also in the delegation will be Foreign Minister Anura Bandaranaike
and foreign secretary H.M.G.S. Palihakkara who will attend the ministerial
and foreign secretaries’ meeting ahead of the summit.
The summit was earlier scheduled for January this year but was put
off in the aftermath of the tsunami catastrophe. Bangladesh has
confirmed that the SAARC summit will be held despite the earthquake
catastrophe in Pakistan with all seven South Asian leaders expected
to attend. Meanwhile, a Foreign Ministry official said the delegation
for the Commonwealth summit in Malta from November 25 to 27 would
need to be decided after the presidential election.
