American
Chamber charity golf tournament - a success
Gordon Glick and his formidable trio put together an excellent Golf
Tournament at the Ridgeways of the Royal Colombo. Glick, the new
Executive Director of AMCHAM took over from Maria Rajanayagam, who
in the past worked splendidly to collect funds for various charities.
The 6th Annual Charity effort just concluded was a rousing success.
Heavily sponsored, with the main sponsor, Suntel and a string of
others, much was collected for the Cancer Hospital.
6 Handicapper Romesh Abhayaratne used his talent to advantage playing
cool calculated methodical golf to not only win the ‘A’
Classic, but also the overall Winner’s Trophy. He was loudly
applauded at the award ceremony having beaten two classy players,
Sanjeeva Wickramanayake and Bandula Weerasinghe. C. Thurairaja and
Primal Wijenayake did not appear displeased with the messy rounds
they handled.
‘B’ Division
Gong Feng and that spritely teenager, Rohitha Fonseka, struck great
form to get all square on 39 each. Feng got ahead with a better
rear nine and Fonseka remained quite pleased with his commendable
performance. Elmo de Silva, Shanil Fernando and Majid got stricken
with aquaphobia and frequent visits to the outskirts ended at the
bottom of the ladder. Hamza Macan Markar and David Ponniah messed
around in the ‘battle of the blues’ which ended all
square.
Other Categories
Kamalesh Johnpillai played a polished round of great golf. Long
off the tee and comfortable on the greens, he impressed immensely
to win with 45 points to beat L.H. Rohan Perera who was praiseworthy.
Prasanna Goonetilleke, John Varley and Jerry Huxtable enjoyed the
contours and scenery, lost a few balls and contributed enormously
towards the upliftment of the pond boys. Joe Perera and Indy Perayerawar
enjoyed an all square situation temporarily until Joe was declared
the winner. They celebrated at the expense of AMCHAM. Shavindra
Fonseka, a delightful kid, extremely talented and quite an accurate
putter, took the Junior event beating Rowan Northcroft by one stroke.
Gymkhana
Kushal Johnpillai was amazingly long off the 8th tee. He won the
longest drive contest comfortably. Lal Wickrematunga’s drive
was comparable with a hop, step and jump effort and he was rewarded.
Mervyn Hettiarachchi had a chat with his titleist and demanded accurate
response to end 2 ft. from the pin and received cheers at the award
ceremony.
Ladies Champ
Elegant “Duchess” Abhayaratne, returned to the award
ceremony to collect a return ticket to Sharjah from Air Arabia for
a formidable performance. Kishani Vethavinayagam, an impressive
player, tied with the “Duchess” but showed no regrets
when Yvonne Abhayratne was declared the winner with a better back
nine.
Final
Cocktails, a great dinner and dancing to a lively band followed,
until the curtain dropped at midnight, giving many the opportunity
of beating the haunting breathalyser tests. Hallelujahs were sung
recognising Gordon Glick and his team for a stunning effort of organising
skills.
