Big fraud alleged in land purchase to start international school
A case was filed at the Mt. Lavinia District Court against the president of the Centre for Islamic Studies alleging fraud in the purchase of a land.
The petitioner Hameed Abdul Karim of Dehiwala cited M.C.M. Zarook of Colombo 6 and Centre for Islamic Studies Colombo as respondents. Mr. Hameed alleged that the first respondent Zarook was the president and member of the institute and that he had purchased 120 perches of land at Rs. 100,000 per perch from Welcome Traders to start a school by the name of Amal International School to provide education to Muslims in Sri Lanka.

Subsequently Mr. Zarook wrote to the Board of Trustees of the school stating that 20 perches of the land occupied by the school belonged to his daughter Fatima Minna and to make payment to purchase the land for the school. Mr. Hameed said that Mr. Zarook had fraudulently claimed 20 perches of the said property and withdrawn Rs. 5 million from the school account on the pretext of purchasing the land.

The petitioner wanted an enjoining order against the 1st respondent preventing him from taking any action regarding the land until the determination of the application. The magistrate Laffar Tahir called for written submissions from the attorneys and the case was postponed for June 20, 2006.
