500,000
poll cards still in post offices
By N.Dilshath Banu
With just four days to go for the presidential election, nearly
half a million poll cards were still at post offices yesterday with
the biggest losers being tsunami survivors, an official said.
Deputy Post Master General R.D Gamini said the department had done
it best to ensure the distribution of poll cards but about half
a million were still in post offices.
He said the half a million poll cards were still at post offices
mainly because the people concerned were not in their houses or
there were changes in addresses. He said those who had not received
their poll cards could collect them from their respective post offices
where tight security is being maintained.
Elections Commissioner Dayananda Dissanayake has assured special
arrangements would be made to give the poll cards to displaced tsunami
victims but the arrangements have apparently not worked out properly.
Top postal officers in tsunami-affected areas such as Hambantota,
Tangalle, Akkaraipattu and Kalmunai said any special arrangements
for tsunami victims had not been effective.
An
Elections Department official said tsunami victims could collect
their polls cards from their respective post officers by producing
even their tsunami aid card if they had lost their national identity
card.
