CIMOGG
wants code of conduct for judges
The Citizens’ Movement for Good Governance (CIMOGG) called
on Parliament to enact legislation containing a Code of Conduct
for all judicial officers and recommended that the Code should be
based on ‘The Bangalore Principles of Judicial Conduct”,
a press release said.
After studying certain incidents which had taken place, the Council
of the Bar Association of Sri Lanka (BASL) has decided to appoint
a high-powered and highly-respected committee to draft a Code of
Conduct for judges. To ensure swift implementation of the Code of
Conduct, CIMOGG, in a letter addressed to the BASL, has suggested
that the BASL call upon its three-member committee to recommend
adoption of ‘The Bangalore Principles of Judicial Conduct’
as the basis of the proposed Code of Conduct, making only those
additions or modifications to meet the Sri Lankan situation.
CIMOGG
also seeks the support of BASL to upgrade the quality and independence
of the Judicial Services Commission (JSC) as it believes that to
continue to keep the JSC under the sole control of the current Chief
Justice is not the best possible arrangement, the press release
added.
