MR
for India but Norway to continue
President Mahinda Rajapakse will make a state visit to India, beginning
possibly on December 27, for crucial talks which will cover the
resumption of the negotiations with Tiger guerrillas.
The
groundwork for this visit was laid during a two-day trip to New
Delhi by Foreign Minister Mangala Samaraweera. He held talks with
Indian Prime Minister Manmohan Singh who also holds the foreign
minister portfolio.
Earlier,
President Rajapakse had planned to make an official working visit
beginning December 10. Indian leaders had expressed their desire
to accord Mr. Rajapakse a state welcome.
Mr.
Samaraweera’s visit to New Delhi also coincided with talks
by government officials with their Indian counterparts. They were
Foreign Secretary, H.M.G.S. Palihakkara and Secretary General of
the Peace Secretariat, John Gunaratne.
Their
talks coincided with another event. Norway’s Minister of International
Development (and Special Envoy) Erik Solheim who arrived in New
Delhi also held talks with Indian government officials. The Sunday
Times learns that Norway is certain to continue to play the role
of facilitator in the peace process. India is learnt to be in favour
of that role.
