Coca-Cola
Sri Lanka looks back on 2005 CSR initiatives
Coca-Cola Beverages Sri Lanka plans to build 50 houses in the tsunami
affected areas for survivors of last December’s disaster.
The company recently signed a MoU with Habitat for Humanity - a
non-profit, organization that works to eliminate poverty housing
around the world and to make housing a matter of conscience and
action. Some homes have already been given to affected families.
“Volunteer
work played a part in this project where our employees sacrificed
their weekends to assist in the re-building process,” the
company said in a statement. It said its corporate social responsibility
initiatives in 2005 were constructed on three platforms - tsunami
recovery, education and environmental protection.
In
its CSR initiatives for 2006 Coca-Cola Beverages Sri Lanka will
continue to focus on education and water conservation. In the immediate
aftermath of the December 26, 2004 tsunami, Coca-Cola Beverages
Sri Lanka joined hands with the government and non profit organizations
in quickly providing relief to the affected people and dispatched
180,000 litres of safe drinking water for the victims. Coca-Cola
Sri Lanka is also working with the Ministry of Education to assist
in re-building a large school in Galle using aid received from The
Coca-Cola Company. Coca-Cola Beverages also embarked on “Coke
Sisu Diriya”, an initiative to uplift the educational conditions
of school children island wide.
Through
this initiative several projects focused on the long-term development
of schools in and around the Biyagama area, where the firm has its
bottling plant. It also gives support to the schools with IT education
by supporting them with scarce resources such as computers, guidance
on training issues, and providing in-house training. One such project
involved 50 computers being donated to specially identified schools
that were in dire need of such resources. Coca-Cola Sri Lanka also
participated and hired in the recently held Job Fair for the disabled
2005.
