Judicial
medical expert retires after long service
Prof. Chandrasiri Niriella an internationally known judicial medical
personality retired on December 5 after three decades of service.
Born in Niriella, Ratnapura in 1940 he was educated at Royal and
Thurstan Colleges before his entry into Medical College. He passed
out in 1967 and did a postgraduate degree in judicial medical science.
He
was appointed a lecturer at the Peradeniya University in 1975 and
was Vice Chancellor of the Kelaniya University for a short period.
He has performed over 10,000 post mortems some of which enabled
investigators to solvecases. He performed autopsies on several bodies
exhumed during the Bosnian war, being on the international panel
of doctors in a job that took him to Cyprus, East Timor and several
other countries.
In
1986 served as a witness in the International Judicial Service in
Bosnia.He has authored many texts of which “Silent witness”
is one which made the subject popular internationally.
He
was involved in the Suriyakanda and Chemmani (Jaffna) exhumation
cases and lately in the tsunami exhumations as a participating observer.
He is married and has three children.
