Cracker
injuries down, but care needed
Injuries from fire crackers on New Year’s day have come down
considerably over the past decade, but people are warned not to
be complacent as carelessness and disregard can go against their
safety.
Colombo
General Hospital’s Accident Ward Director Dr. Anil Jasinghe
said fire cracker related injuries on festive occasions have dropped
due to extra caution by the people. But he added that such injuries
were possible if they ignored the danger they could cause.
He
said the Colombo General Hospital usually receive around 20 to 25
cases of fireworks-related injuries on December 31 and New Year.
Dr. Jasinghe advised against children and persons who had consumed
liquor lighting fireworks. He added that skyrockets should be handled
with extra care as they tend to go into high-rise buildings and
cause damage.
