Chandrika’s
allocation slashed
By Chandani Kirinde
Parliament has slashed by Rs. 10 million the recurrent expenditure
initially allocated to the office of former President Chandrika
Kumaratunga in the Budget for this year.
The
office of the former president was initially allocated Rs, 25, 406,000
for recurrent expenditure but during the Committee Stage of the
Budget, this was reduced to Rs. 15, 406,000.
The
massive amount allocated to President Kumaratunga’s office
drew criticism from the Supreme Court when the Appropriation Bill
went before it in November.
The
Court noted that while only Rs 7 million was allocated to the office
of former President D.B. Wijetunga and while Rs. 29 million was
allocated as recurrent expenditure of all the judges of the Supreme
Court with no allocation for any capital expenditure, the Office
of former President Kumaratunga was allocated Rs 25.4 million as
recurrent expenditure and Rs 4.5 million as capital expenditure.
The
Court in its ruling sent to Parliament last month said that while
the allocation of resources was a matter of Government policy, the
facts stated above had the effect of undermining the judiciary of
this country at its highest-level.
