Defence
Chief ordered to declare assets
The Commission to Investigate Allegations of Bribery or Corruption
has called for the assets declaration of Admiral Daya Sandagiri,
former Commander of the Sri Lanka Navy and now Chief of Defence
Staff.
The
move, The Sunday Times learns, is pursuant to an inquiry the Commission
is now conducting in respect of allegations levelled against Admiral
Sandagiri. Among other matters it relates to the acquisition of
a prime coconut property in Boyawalana in the Kurunegala district
and the alleged use of Navy vehicles cum personnel.
Though
an initial probe got under way earlier, the call to him to declare
his assets came only recently. Compounding this situation further
is an in inquiry at Navy Headquarters to ascertain how documents
relating to Assets Declarations made by Admiral Sandagiri over the
years have been tampered with. All high ranking officers are required
to declare their assets. Such declarations in sealed envelopes are
held in custody at the respective military headquarters.
The
Sunday Times learns that Admiral Sandagiri's Assets Declarations
for 1997, 1998, 1999 and 2000 have been removed from Navy Headquarters
on August 26, 2005. They had been returned on August 30, 2005. Again
a set of sealed envelopes containing Admiral Sandagiri's Assets
Declarations for 1994, 1995, 1997, 1998, 1999 and 2000 have been
removed on August 30, 2005 and replaced on 1st September. The details
of the removal of these Assets Declarations and their return have
been recorded in a register that is now being kept under strict
security.
The
Sunday Times learns that the original envelopes that bore the hand
writing of a different person have been replaced. All the new sealed
envelopes, it has been found, contain the handwriting of one person.
Naval authorities are unable to ascertain whether fresh declarations
have been introduced for the years in question. They say that is
a matter for other state agencies like the Police and the Commission
to Investigate Bribery or Corruption.
