My wish that peace be ushered: Prime Minister
Prime Minister Ratnasiri Wickremanayake in his New Year message has declared that his wish was that the country ushers in sustainable peace.

The message said: “One year has passed and another year has dawned. It is the wish of everyone to realize the new expectations of the New Year. The last year was a critical year for the country. The critical decision of the people was to entrust the country to a new leader to build a new Sri Lanka and usher in peace and bring prosperity. The co-operation of the people as well as all the political parties will be necessary for both the Government as well as the President during this year also. So long as the country is divided and disunited it will not bring any relief or benefit to the country.

“We must concentrate on the New Year in relation to the last year. It is the wish of all that the killings of human beings, anti-social activities and drug abuse which took place last year should not recur during this year.
“A government alone is unable to bring about a righteous, civilized, courteous, virtuous and pious society. It needs co-operation as well as the commitment of the people. How worthy it may be if we all make some contribution in the New Year for the emergence of a society enriched with ethics.

“During the New Year we must unite and get together forgetting narrow differences of opinion in the interests of the country. All of us have experienced the consequences of the gruesome war and we must get rid of terrorism ironing out all the differences.

“We must wish to usher in sustainable peace to the country at least during the New Year. It is with great affection I wish a prosperous New Year bringing relief to the security forces and all Sri Lankans.
