By S.M.D.Sirisena
Thilini Piyadasa and Kalpani Herath, both from Kandy, dominated
the 59th Table Tennis National Championships when they bagged the
men and women’s titles at the S. Thomas’ Mt. Lavinia
Gymnasium yesterday.
Thilini
Piyadasa, an old boy of Vidyartha College Kandy and a graduate from
Sri Jayawardenapura University, was in a class of his own as he
demolished Tarindu Samaraweera of S. Thomas’ Mt.Lavinia, a
winner of the STC Colours ‘blue’ award given to outstanding
performance in the sport, by four sets to two in a marathon six
setter. This is the first time that a graduate has won the national
TT title. Kalpani Herath, an advance level student of Girl’s
High School Kandy, came back after two years to win the title with
a four sets to two win over former national champion Deepika Rodrigo.
Deepika is also an old girl of Girl’s High School Kandy and
is now attached to Lake House Colombo. Both Kalpani and Deepika
have won the national singles titles earlier.
In
the men’s quarter finals last year’s champion Charitha
Rangana lost to Rohan Sirisena while in the women’s semi-finals
last year’s champion Ishari Maduranga crashed to Deepika Rodrigo.
Kalpani
Herath won a double at the contest taking the women’s singles
